Another goodbye

My heart has joined
the Thousand, for my friend stopped running today.
In the end, we decided to put Strauss to sleep. We found him lying in the sun,
unable to move his back legs and far from his bowl of water. It seemed as if he
could feel anything in his back legs. I would pinch him hard and there would be
no reaction. Moving him back to the shade was quite difficult.
I told mom what if that happened one day that no one was home and he was
paralized under the sun a whole morning. He was going to suffer.
So we called the vet and he came for Strauss in the morning. Mom buried him
in the empty lot in across the street, where Strauss father, Sarge is also
buried.
What hurt me the most was the fact that we had to lie to Abigail. How do you
explain to a little girl that's just starting kindergarden, that the big dog she
loved had to be put to sleep? She will know the truth when she's older, but
right now she has been told that Strauss was taken to a farm to be with other
dogs and that he's happy there.
I wasn't here when she came and she was told that. But imagining her reaction
at not finding Strauss brings me to tears.
Gods, I miss him.
